I don't remember the particulars on prussic acid, but 30+ years ago when we grazed SS, we would always try and have a vet there when we turned in and have him stick around for the first hour or so. 

We typically would turn in for the first time 2 or 3 hours before sunset and offer some sort of refreshments for the vet while we enjoyed a good visit and hoped his services weren't needed.
