Leesburg, Ohio | It's really pretty simple to me.
I don't really have a problem with anyone who wants to grow or buy or consume organic food.
What I have HUGE problem with, is anyone who tells me or anyone else that they MUST produce, sell, buy, or consume organic food.
My reasoning is quite simple: Complete conversion to organic production is NOT SUSTAINABLE, and morally wrong. Organic production requires that much of today's technology that enables us to produce sufficient quantities and quality of food to feed the world, cannot be used. It is fact that without this technology, it would require many more acres and hours of labor to produce what is needed. Maybe there are those who want to go back to forty acres and a mule. That's fine. Most of the world would not make that choice. Most of the world would choose to keep a few acres for wildlife and greenspace and recreation. Most of the world would choose to keep (or improve) their current standard of living. Most of the world would choose to eat, period. None of that would be possible without the use of at least some modern production methods and technology.
Some can afford to make a choice for organics. Great! But not everyone has that luxury. Should those who can afford it decide for those who can't?
Again, if some want organics, fine, knock yourself out. Requiring the wholesale conversion of our entire production system, by telling everyone that they MUST convert to organics, would not only put an impossible strain on the capabilities of our planet, it would be a moral outrage!
Taken to its extreme: which one of you wants to decide who has to die from starvation? | |
