Iowa | No, I don't want to rethink my position. Words have meaning. Period. It's sort of like how people these days say that everyone has different morals. Well if that's true, and everyone has different morals, then there are no morals, which could not be further from the truth. It is wrong to kill. It is wrong to steal out of greed. These are timeless morals, and there is always a distinct difference between right and wrong.
There is no better word to illustrate this by than the word "liberal". Liberal meant, in its inception, someone who favors the individual over the collective, who wants social justice, the rule of law, and general equality of all mankind. Now it is used by conservatives and Republicans to describe anyone who is "other".
And the fact that definitions of words dissolve more and more as time goes on is only the fault of postmodernism, in which no one knows the actual meanings of words anymore, and anything can mean anything. Another good example is "Marxist". If someone had no idea who Karl Marx was, or what he actually wrote about in today's America, you would think he was Lucifer incarnate. The fact remains, however, no matter how you cut it, Karl Marx was one of the most important economists in history. Whether you agree with him or not, his impact on economics is irrefutable. But, a Marxist gets thrown in with all these other groups into the term "liberal" to, once again, describe anyone who is "other".
