J,ReinkeFarms - 4/4/2011 07:18 I didn't read the whole thing but you want to put at least 4-6 inches of stone below the tile to keep the fines from washing into it. Around here when we design a footing drain we have 6 inches below, 6 inches above and recommend a minimum 6 on the outside with 4 inches between the tile and the footing with stone in that gap. That way the sand backfill doesn't wash in and plug the tile. Not a big fan of fabric wrapped tile, that tends to be useless in 5 to 10 years. Contractors here use black tile, sometimes the gold stuff is cheaper wherever that comes from, one guy I saw use red, I don't think color matters. Just my 2 cents.

I perfered using 3/4 stone as you discribed and then laying landscape fabric on top of the stone to keep the silt / sand out, then back fill. A good base of stone below, around and on top the tile makes all the difference of properly working tile to keep water and water pressure off the wall and water out of the basement.
