With a competent tech, your conception rate won't be a whole lot different than with natural service. I have been hearing pretty good things about the CIDR program that is run like the MGA program. Instead of heat detecting they are going for timed AI and getting really good results. The problem with heat detecting is cows have a wide range of activity when they are in heat. Some cows may ride once and walk off and never show any interest again, while others are in the middle of the scrum for a couple of hours. With timed AI at least every cow is exposed and you don't have to mess with the worst part about AIing, the heat detection.

We have been using AI since the early 80s. It is a good way to improve your herd without having to shell out the big money to buy the bulls that you really want to use. Probably the biggest bonus is you get to have fewer bulls around. In my book that is always worth a lot.
