I have never noticed significant crop damage from turkeys, and we have flocks of 50 or more scrounging around. We only have a couple pheasants, and those are surviving pen-raised birds, so they are probably nowhere near as aggressive as native birds. The biggest wildlife problem for me in small corn has been sandhill cranes-they will go right down the row and pull out the young plants. I have been able to control the damage with Kernel Guard, the old formulation which contains Lindane. I scored several cases of it 2 years ago, I have enough left for about 2 more years and then I don't know what I'll do. There is a crane repellent chem available, but it costs $5-6/A where the KG only cost a bit over a dollar and works on insects as well. Just wait until your corn is beginning to tassel, then the deer walk down the row munching the tassels as they emerge. Almost makes me want to quit farming and get into a manufacturing business..that's where the easy big money is! |
