Penobsquis, New Brunswick, Canada | john, if this were my cornfield, i'd go back to basics. soil analysis, o.m. test(type and quantity), compaction test, moisture content and most of all visual root analysis on site of the plants. if one plant has more/less root mass than the other, nutrient uptake will be different. and what released the nutrients that form the outside film on soil/o.m. particles will be the next question. what caused the root mass difference? careful notes are required and an outside agency can help. up here, if a farmer aligns themselves with OACC (Organic Agriculture College of canada) a vast resource based/testing/evaluating organization becomes available. i have one field of oats being evaluated for seeding technique and another for weed control technique. they have the resources to do the testing for me....and the people. they are also piggybacking on some of the research i'm doing on my own. perhaps you have the same type of organization in your area.
