Sioux County, IA | We just finished up our second year of strip tillage. We're sold on the system, end of story. I haven't felt this good about a crop in the field, ever. Since we are pretty much through phase 1, the evaluation of the system, we're now moving to phase 2, which I would consider to be maximizing the value of the system. Part of that evaluation is a big decision regarding our planter. We are currently running a JD 24 row CCS, which I thougth was the perfect planter. I do like the planter, it's a great piece of machinery. However I've come to the conclusion that it may not be compatible for our strip till system. The biggest negative of that planter as it relates to what we are trying to do is the length of the drawbar. Having a draw bar that long makes it almost impossible to plant with high accuracy on the strips we are making ahead of time. I should mention that we are currently 80% continuous strip till corn.
What I'm thinking about is switching to mounted planters, would help us maximize the system by making our planting pass more accurate? I would also like to move towards 2X2 banded fertilizer on the planter, so what would be the best configuration to get that done? Any and all comments appreciated, TIA. | |
