Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | 30 years, well I don't know. That is a long time. I routinely feed 2-3 year old off quality hay to beef cows. Some of it has even been culled out of good hay that went south because the bottoms were wet. Flip the bales and let them dry and restack it, feed it the next winter. I always try and feed it that winter, but usually can't get it all done. It feeds good, I pull a test on it once and a while and compare it to the test on the 'good' hay from the same lot. Usually comes back about 10% lower. Figure how much of the bale is bad and adjust accordingly.
I've also been offered hay that on the top of outside stacks all winter. Even with our pitiful snow/rainfall it is completely worthless. Might make good compost for the garden. But in a barn you might be alright. Pull a test and find out. | |
