SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ | I normally put my NH3 on in the fall. This spring I decided to plant more corn on corn so those acres needed either spring N or sidedress. Where I overlapped fall N into the corn stalks and then planted corn this spring the corn looks great. Where I sidedressed the corn and opened up the ground with a big slot ,that corn looks like its suffering from the heat today. This wind and heat is really drying out the soil.
This field had 3500 gals of manure (250-150 -150)applied fall of 2005 for the 2006 corn crop.
The soil was worked once with a field cultivator and was the last field of corn I planted so it had more drying days then any of my fields before planting. So its not like I worked it wet if fact it was pretty dry when field cultivating.
It will be interesting when the yield monitor hits those areas. I have them marked for future testing.
As of now, its all fall or not at all. If we don't get rain and it stays windy and warm that slot will keep drying out and the roots won't make use of the N in my opinion.
Ed ,you guys have to be seeing the same thing out east as you are dryer then us.
