Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | Most all of the potatoes around here are dammer-diked. It is generally the last pass through the field before the pipe is set, and they grow to harvest. The ground here will pack easily, esp. when it is a little wet. By making the last pass with a ripper in the furrows you can break up any compaction that happened from planting or cultivation.
Most of the spud ground has been ripped once or twice (or more), rototilled etc so compaction isn't a problem other than in the furrows where the planters etc have made tracks. A fully loaded spud planter+liquid fert tanks+fungicide tanks is all heavy. The fields here are all flat and level so I am not exactly sure about the diking, but I know the ripping has helped yields substantially.
