The insurance I used to have is as you describe - the good acres can make up for the bad, and end up with an average that is above what is payable from insurance. The insurance I have now pays for any losses that are at least 20 acres (or 20% for smaller fields) on any given insured field. Of course the rest of the acres are insured too, if the production is not high enough in the fall.
