Subject: Re: How soon to sidedress 28%? - another factor is terrain

Blue Earth, MN
I wasn't even thinking of terrain but that presents issues as well when trying to side dress...good point. I was speaking based on big, flat fields.

We stay away from nh3, haven't used it on most farms for 5+ years and am seeing many improvements in soil tilth and microb activity. Have been all 28 or 32% and yields have been excellent when compared to others in the area. We've mostly sprayed on about 1/2 of the N with pre-emerge, and sidedressed the remaining 1/2. We still like the broadcast N because it makes the chemical work better. Next year we are going to still spray on about 1/4 and place the rest in the strip. We would treat side dressing as a "backup" plan if we can't get the N on ahead of the planter.
