Home Hill. QLD Australia | Over here in Oz in the cane industry, if its the same stuff and it looks like it, we call it fluming(pronounced flooming). We punch a hole every row of cane, use the blanks to turn them off and cut different size holes in the blank for better control of water usage depending on soil type, row length etc. We put it down and pick it up up to a dozen times a year until cane is too big to work then it stays down until harvest next year. There are various problems with it. Can't push water uphill which is why they invented laser levelling. Vermin (rats, mice, snakes, frogs, canetoads) tend to live in it when it doesn't have water in it then the dingos or wild dogs chew through it to reach the vermin. Very hard to patch in fact nearly impossible. Haven't found a glue that will stick to it yet. It lasts here a full crop cycle usually (around 5 years) or in some cases up to 2 crop cycles. We have been using it for over 30 years and is the only way to irrigate. (Cheapest) There are limitations to how much water will flow through them but not sure what they are. My longest run is around 240metres. We have a lot simpler fluming winders here. A cradle to sit in and a home made roll with a chalin driving it. If anyone is interested in some pics let me know and I will attempt to take some and show the system here. Cheers | |
