Blue Earth, MN
I completely agree with your mashing corn statement. While I was sidedressing and trouncing down excellent looking corn, I was wondering if it is economical anymore when considering the alternatives. I understand the later the better with N but when considering the drawbacks of sidedressing (trouncing GERMINATED plants at $150+ per bag, another pass across the field, efficiency of N placement, etc), I think it looses its attractiveness. in a hurry. I personally think if a majority of the 32% can be put on in a strip (in a 3x3 manner) ahead of the planter, that would be a better way. I understand the N is placed earlier and I am at risk of loosing more then compared to sidedressing but in all reality I am talking 4-6 weeks earlier. I think that risk is economically offset by the issues of sidedressing I stated above.

The more I think about it, sidedressing is kind of redundent when a spring strip till pass can be done. If too wet to strip till, then just plant and sidedress N on later.
