I thought SS meant BB?
Not always, SS was a trim and suspension package, avalible with small block engines through most GM divisions.
Another bit of GM performance trivia. The SS396 cars sold in 70-71 actually had the new GM 402 big block engines, but the 396 had such a reputation that the cars were still badged as 396's
