I plant 185,000 in 18 in. rows. Have planted as low as 171,000. Like the high rate. It does cost a little more but feel a high rate within reason is better. Never have had trouble with emergence as their so thick only a 3 in. crust could hold them. The only downfall would be a drought but been through a few and really haven't seen any problems. The later you get, the higher the population, half again as much by late June. Does make for a lot of trash come fall. I look at it this way, I can loose 25% to whatever and still have excellent stand. If they all survive there is less stress on each individual to make a max yield. I do farm on excellent soil and conventional. Just my opinion.
