Subject: RE: Why Is Wheat Hay Burning Up?

Western Oregon
I always found when putting up grain hay that I wanted to set the rolls down to where the stems were crushed so much they were almost shredded, this let the moisture out of the boot. It sounds like a lot of moisture was left in the stem and when put in a round bale it had no where to go. A small square with the stems sheared on the sides lets the moisture out. Cut on friday baled on monday didn't let the moisture out and it should have been left out for a while even if it had not been baled for a week. Grain hay is the hardest to cure good here when cut early while moisture is in the ground. I didn't like cutting fall planted grain for hay. spring planted isn't ready to cut here till july and the moisture is out of the ground. I don't know how much moisture was in the stems but here it would have had water running off the machine if the rolls were set tight and the stems were crushed. Sounds like it had enough moisture in it to make haylage if put in a bag with no air...James
