Hay Wilson in TX
Posted 5/26/2007 20:15 (#154689 - in reply to #154655)
Subject: Not completely accurate

Little River, TX
There is a streak of black dirt in Mississippi, and a good sized swath in Texas. The black dirt in Texas roughly runs from San Antonio to the other side of Fort Worth & Dallas, and about 50 to 75 miles wide.
Can't speak about other black dirt but ours is high in clay with a modest amount of organic matter. Build a big fire and the clay turns sort of white.
I have always heard red soils have a good supply of iron. In our soil beans turn yellow for lack of iron. Alfalfa has no problem finding iron.
