Pulaski, TN | Wheat hay that has been rolled for 4 to 5 weeks is starting to ignite in the barn. 3 barns have completely burned and another 2 were caught in time to save. After hay was rolled a thermometer was used to monitor the inside temperature of the hay. For 3 weeks it never got over 90 degrees. Last week smoke was noticed coming from the barn. Neighbors were called to start removing the hay. As the hay was brought out some of the bales just ignited. This was not my hay. However I sold some wheat hay that was so dry it would not roll good. After all these barns in the area had burned customer went and checked his hay and some of it was smoking. He remove this hay and none burned. The roll that was smoking the most stopped when it was put outside. He pulled hay from the roll and it had the pretty green color that hay is supposed to have and also smelled good. Question is what is happening? Did the freeze that occured the first of May do something to the plant and now some kind of chemical reaction is causing this hay to burn? Any ideas? THANKS!!! | |
