I have been guilty of not following up as well. It took me quite a while to learn some "internet etiquette". My first mistake was not introducing myself, and I've made various other faux-pas. There are no rules or guidelines posted anywhere so it just takes awhile to figure things out. Now I always try to follow up, even if its a day or two later.
