Litchfield MN. | It takes a village....
My husband and I were firm parents and we are proud of how our boys have turned out (21 & 18). I am also the type who will correct other people's kids--whether relatives, neighbors or friends--right on the spot. (Even strangers--right boys? :) I think this is also where society is lacking, today. When I was growing up, I had grandparents, an uncle, and neighbors who would put me in my place when I crossed the line. Because society lacks standards for child-rearing and because there is an unclear definition of abuse, people are afraid to step in. This also does not help the kids.
Another thing lacking is respect. Everyone is so worried about being "liked", they sacrifice it for something stronger called "respect". To be liked, one will go out of their way to be nice, etc. To earn respect, one will adhere to principles. Having a child's respect will grow with them.
I support Tim, Mike and Mrs. B's comments.
