just keep talking to him. He will soon start associating the words, demeanor, and facial expressions with "this is good or this is bad".  Skip the baby talk completely, just keep the sentences fairly simple and he will learn very quickly.

Keep "time outs" limited to their age 1 year old is 1 minute, etc..    I didn't think that would work but I've seen it repeated 3 times (3 different kids) and it does work.
