Franklinton, LA | About ten years back I made a talk to two sections of seventh grade science students in Baton Rouge, LA. I started out by passing out some mature cotton, rice and soybean stalks. These plants had been pulled upo, roots and all. They were amazed at the nodules on the roots of the soybean plants and how the plant made nitrogen fertilizer. It took a lot of explaing to convince the students you could get a white rice grain from a rice plant. They also enjoyed picking the seed from the mature cotton bolls. We then discussed how various products were made from cotton seed oil and soybean oil. They were really surprised at the role science plays in producing and processing ag commodities.
Jon, I am glad you made the presentation. I really thank we can do a lot by letting kids know about agriculture and how their education can be used to improve our society. | |
