What really made a difference here with the plow was that the soil "heals up" so much quicker than what some of the damage from the trencher can do. And, no soil/ subsoil mixing to deal with. If the conditions are right, the plow will shatter a lot of sub soil if that's an effect you like. In our soils, the trencher can cause so much compaction that the tile can take a lot longer to start working. I don't think anyone in this area would want laterals trenched in- I'd like the mains plowed in if there was a plow that would do it.

Never really figured out the reasoning behind liking a trencher solely because of the ability to locate old tile. Its a very expensive way to do so compared to other methods. Most of our FSA aerial photo's show tile runs pretty clearly. If not, I've hired local pilots with small planes to fly me around in the spring. If done on the right day, tile stand out quite plainly.
