I've seen on the pumps that octane was measured using the (R+M)/2 method -- but never knew what that meant. Wikipedia has more.

Due to the different methods, U.S. and Canada ratings are 4 to 5 units lower than the rest of the world for the same fuel. Our 87 is their 92.
