Had this happen this year on a planted corn field. As the corn grew, you can see waves. (Supposed to spread on 30 ft but you could see 60 foot strips). I flagged the rows between the passes and came in this fall on split it. Like you, I felt this was going to screw the field up for years to come.
On the grass fields for seed, you could see over applications while swathing (lodged badly/higher leaf matter). I never was a fan of litter on grass for seed because N timing is critical where as litter N has prolonged release and promotes higher foliage production rather than seed.
