Subject: farmer frustration



Hello folks,

students in one of my classes are currently collecting answers to the following questions from farmers in their communities...
Any answers you would like to share to some or all of these questions would be appreciated.

* Are there any aspects of current US farm policies or programs that you think are seriously flawed? Explain.

* Are there any aspects of the business practices of ag input or processing companies that you think are seriously flawed?Explain.

* What do you think are the best options available for farmers to express their concerns about flawed government or industry policies/practices?

* Do you remember when the first Farm Aid concert took place in 1985? Did you know that a Farm Aid concert has taken place every year since? Who do you think has been "aided" by these concerts?

* Are you familiar with any organizations like the National Farmers Organization, National Farmers Union or the Organization for Competitive Markets that advocate for more open and competitive markets and against anti-competitive practices by agribusinesses? If so, explain?

* Do you recall when 6000 farmers drove their tractors to Washington DC in Feb 1979? What were they protesting? Why don't American farmers engage in protests any more?
