NW Washington
It depends on what they were doing in the service, and they always need to be aware of what is going on and how to best deal with the situation at hand. But they have their share of duds too, and they often get rejected early in their careers. However, the rejects usually don't tell many folks about it when they get back in to civilian life.

My experience is with Navy and there almost all folks are trained and skilled in almost all trades, like electronics, diesel mechanics, jet mechanics, electricians, shipfitters, machinist, radar operators and so forth. Of course there are cooks and paper pushers too. The Air Force is much the same.
