North Central Kansas
All good ideas and possibilities to try. I have a hard time justifying baling corn stalks because of the cost involved to put them up. I guess if I didn't have the other hay available it would be a different story. I utilize those corn stalks by grazing my cows on them. To me that is much cheaper. Although, I have heard guys who will sale their alfalfa, because that's cash in their pocket, and then bale the stalks and feed it with distillers grain. Maybe that's the way to go too? I just need to put a pencil to all the options. At this time I'm looking at bringing the calves home and weaning them in the lot. I have some oats planted beside the lot so I can open it up and let them graze those oats while feeding them some alfalfa and grain ration. Then when they are going good and are healthy I may turn them out on some milo stalks that we double cropped into wheat stubble. There is plenty of volunteer wheat coming in it.
