| There are special rechargable alkalines that take a recharge better and safer than plain alkalines. Part of the recharging process is moving metals back to solids from being moved into solution by the battery supplying a load. Part of the hazard is that thins the case and putting it back doesn't put it back better in the thin spots so you have a much bigger chance of leaking stuff to eat what ever the cell is used in. And if the charger isn't gentle on charge rate the battery can expand rapidly, sometimes with a bang.
