Sorry to hear that mmaddox. Family can be pretty rough.
For the original question, if you have 300 acres paid for, one can about make a living at it - if one has a pretty good handle on expenses & life expenses. Lot tougher tho if you are renting 1/2 of it. As a couple, you'd want one full time job between you, to pay the monthly bills and handle the health insurance.
