Subject: Backgrounding calves without silage

North Central Kansas

I'm looking for some new ideas or suggestions.  Every year we background our own calves with a corn silage, alfalfa, prairie hay, and grain ration.  This year with the corn prices and good crops we did not chop any for silage.  I thought we may chop some milo, but with the price climbing with corn we may harvest it all as well.  Therefore, I will not have any silage to mix in my rations.  I know there are several approaches available, I'm just not familiar or had any experience with anything else.  I have plenty of alfalfa hay, oat hay, and prairie hay available.  I have also planted some oats to graze this fall coming off grass if I need too.  Although, I didn't plant enough to finish the calves off to where I want them.  Any ideas?
