I would use a plasma torch and if  you don't have one, go borrow or buy one.   I find it much easier to gauge welds with a plasma, or you might be able to cut it clean.  You won't  have near the slag with plasma.

 Then you will have a plasma to use for everything else.  We hardly every use the Oxy/Acet. torch for cutting in the shop anymore!
