On a job like that I use one of those ultra thin grinding blades on a 4 1/2" hand held grinder.Grind at a 45 degree angle to where the two pieces meet. Once I get it cut most of the way through, the weld will usually break.Then I will grind the rest of the weld off.No chance for unintentional gouges or screw ups that way.
