| Gus Belk started Steak & Shae in Normal, IL when he converted a small gas station/restrurant called "Shell's Chicken" into a "Steak & Shake" in 1934. Later in the 1930s he bought a small chain of hamburger joints called "Goal Posts" and converted them to 'Steak & Shake" He purchased a large farm just south of Rossville, IL on Rt 1 where he raised cattle that he used to make his "steaknburgers". The farm is still known locally as the "Steak & Shake Farm" The farm had a large 28 room home. Later, after the farm had sold cattle were feed in the first floor of the house. Later the farm was purchased by RC Morgan and his wife Pauline who restored the house. After their deaths the house and acreage, approx 3,000 ac, was sold. | |
