Remember, a wedding is like a graduation from any school, it is a commencement, a beginning, not the end product.  You are wise in spending on the marriage instead of the wedding. 

My wife and I had five people in our wedding party, the minister, ourselves, and a couple that stood up for us.  Since he didn't have any wedding expenses, Sue's Father and Mother bought us a couch we needed.  We stil have the couch, unlike useless stuff bought for some weddings.  Next November will be our 45th anniversary, it was and is a constant learning experience.
