Subject: Re: Rotting tomatoes

Here in Iowa we have had a wet hot summer so we have a lot of tomato and garden issues in general. A lot of folks are seeing there tomatoes rot on the vine before or during the final ripening stage. This is being caused by a fungal growth that has had perfect growing conditions a lot of the season. To minimize the damage a fungicide could be used, but it may be too late for that. The method most are using is picking the tomato's when orange and mature but not fully ripened, let them ripen off the vine and you should have success. We are also seeing a lot of white meat on the tomato's, which is caused by incomplete germination caused from the heat. They may be a little woody at the top, but it shouldn't effect the entire fruit.

Hope this helps, I know it stinks but this is the hand a lot of us were dealt this year.
