I agree with John. You need to know what kind of finish was used. My bet is that it was some kind of a waterborne finish. I don't know of any oil based that would do that, normally, and, I've never had a problem with waterbased, either. Point is, if you try to do the right thing to the wrong finish it might not make it better, and could make it worse.
