Wige has been using Murphy's Oil Soap & Liquid Gold for years and swears by it but says it hasn't worked on this though I know she hasn't tried using it with steel wool yet. I know what you mean on elbow grease. Our house is over 100 yrs old (family home). All the wood work had turned black over the years from various cleaners & such. WE spent a couple winters stripping it all down to the natural wood, clear yellow pine 10" w.. I also made wood trim to match the original baseboard, door trim & headers for a couple rooms that had been remodeled or added on to back in the '60s & had ranch casing. We get lot of compliements on the trim.
