First of all, members to be taught that tithing is required and not an option. That's 10% of one's increase or income. I won't go into the debate over whether one tithes from the gross or the net. Giving is a state of mind and a lifestyle, but too many in the church today are being taught a false doctrine where this is concerned, and they hold onto their money and give of their time or talents as a part of the tithe. That is not correct or biblical. Is your church actively giving away what it can to help the kingdom, or is it hanging on to every spare cent it can? If you hang on to it, that will be all the church will ever have, but if you let it go and give what you can to further the kingdom, God will honor that and bless the church with more. Fear is not of God - that comes from doubt, unbelief and satan.

Don't make a business out of your church. Dinners, bazaars, car washes, etc. are okay for specific purposes, but if these are needed to sustain the church's budget then they need to stop. The church was never meant to be a business. Those types of things are traps that teach the congregation to get something every time they contriute to the fundraiser, instead of giving for the sheer joy of it or out of obedience.

Make sure your pastor and the leadership of the church are all tithers and are leading by example. The congregation may not know whether they tithe or not, but God does, and He takes seriously the behavior of those who are in authority over a congregation.
