My wife is 1/2 Italian, and she was taught to give a gift/money equal to the cost of your dinner at the reception. ie. $60/plate dinner x 2 guests = $120 gift. And yes, my father-in-law's family were asking how much the meal was going to be so they could figure out how much to spend!
We typically give $100 unless they are close friends, then its higher.
