The ultimate "root" of the problem, I'm sad to say, is my generation - the Baby Boomers (although there are exceptions). Far too many of them bought into the left wing, "free love," hippy movement with its permissiveness and precociousness, which led to the "Dr. Spock method" of raising children (the child is always right, the child should never be allowed to believe he/she has failed, the child should never be punished, etc.). The political and social left wing began to take over in the 1960's and it's been downhill ever since, especially for the past 20 years or so. Einstein's "theory of relativity" (which has scientific merit) has been confused with "relativism" (which basically says, "There are no absolutes," which is absolute hog wash). If there is no standard then there is nothing that is "wrong." Nothing could be further from the truth.
