Midwest | The family owned bank in my hometown recently went from having a federal charter to having a state charter. It is common knowledge around town that it was because it is cheaper to insure deposits with a state charter than a federal charter. This bank is very conservative in it's lending practices, and is not in any kind of trouble.
I've heard other banks in the area want to do the same, but the state won't touch them because their balance sheets are in bad shape.
