These politicians are all friggin morons without a spine(the ones in Canada are no better). This is the easiest legislation to make and look like heroes doing it and possibly the worst economically for the manufactures and the end-use consumer . Why not give the the engine and car manufactures some tax incentives for increasing mileage. Taxes which may sound like blasphemy would even be a better way to change what consumers buy , or even better give rebates to consumers to buy more fuel efficient vehicles. These top down directives hurt everyone along the way except the government. The number seems kind of arbitrary to me, with their genius logic why not pick a number of 45 or 55 and end Americas dependence on foreign oil. All this system does is put all the weight on the shoulders of the car companies and lets the politicians get all the glory.
