There is something to be said for setting a target, but like we're seeing in diesels (what nonsense can you add next?), it doesn't always mean better. 35mpg is certainly attainable if you put a 1.3L Diesel in a pickup, make the fenders hood, roof out of thinner or composite materials and use lighter driveline components. Of course, it will feel like 1978 again - we'll miss the 'muscle car' (now muscle truck) days.

If you think of it, we're swimming in oil and fuel right now because of high prices. Folks are not driving as much and certainly park the expedition for grocery trips. Our current higher fuel prices still seem 'fueled' by speculation (big $) and at some point will be more regulated. Of course that will affect the 'good' speculation in grains and livestock as well.

Would we as a country by a cheap, well developed car that held 4 folks or came in a small pickup variant? VW did this, but vw's are not cheap and besides car and driver I don't think the US is in love with those cars or the concept yet.

Thanks,

Pat
