Lots of ground in western Iowa and especially southern Iowa shouldn't be farmed.
I have ground the landlord put in CRP in the 80's. it wouldn't even grow weeds it was so thin.
I started putting fertilizer on it after the first or second year.
It grows decent corn now.
I farm about 75% of the ground I rent or own. Some I have farmed in the past and it just isn't profitable.
I don't pasture it either as it won't produce enough feed to pay to fence it off. Ihave a friend that had some of that ground. 65 acres and he had to feed the few cows he had on it.
Some might be a little steep, although if it will grow good corn, not leaving tracks on the upper side never stopped me from farming it.
