Subject: RE: Cab tractor

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

Our first tractor with a cab was an IH 1456 with a Hiniker cab. My brother traded his 706 in on it. Turn the radio up loud was the only way to hear it. Cab was ok when the a/c was working but it always seemed to quit on the hottest, dustiest days. Better than no cab but if given a choice I would have taken the JD 4020 open station or the Ford 9000 with a roll bar/canopy. Soon after the 1456 Dad got a JD 4630 with the SG cab. Light years ahead of the Hiniker in my opinion and the a/c actually worked. Before cabs I started out on a JD 430 at 8 years old. The "big" tractor was a JD 3010. Dad soon traded the 430 for a 520 (hand clutch with a rear exhaust). Spent quite a bit of time pulling a rear mount 4 row cultivator with that. After only one or two years the 520 got traded in on a JD 4010. Spent most of my summers from about age 10 or 11 to about 16 on that 4010. During that time my brother came back and started farming with Dad. He bought a 706 Farmall that I had to drive quite a bit. I would have been very happy to not have had that experience. When I was about 16 brother added the Ford 9000 and I became the primary driver. Then came the 1456 and the 4630. A couple of years later the 1980s hit and our farming operation got curtailed. 4630, 1456, and 9000 all went down the road. What was left was the '72 4020 (which I finally took over), Dad had bought a '68 4020 power shift, and we still had the 4010 and 3010. My part of the operation folded. My brother lasted a couple more crops and he folded. Dad made it to the early '90s and he folded. Managed to hang on to 50 acres, the house, and a few outbuildings. I bought the 3010 back from one of the neighbors a few years ago and it will never leave again as long as I'm alive.
