Subject: RE: Set aside, soil bank?

Southern MN
Some years they released it to be baled if there was a shortage of animal feed. In 1988 my cousin had a baling business and he square baled thousands of acres. The program was pretty necessary for survival in the 80’s have a hard time believing many took the risk to make feedstock out of it and risk the penalties and getting kicked out. I was pretty young at the time but I remember a few years where you could put all your corn acres in your set aside. Dad had a growing off farm business that took most of his time so we did that at least one year if not more. Plowed down Sudex all of august and September. Not sure how it paid vs growing a crop. Otherwise there was 10%? of your corn base put to set aside each year. Believe that ended with freedom to farm?
