Farmer with $8 corn market. Since that's probably not going to happen in my lifetime again, I'd like to do some serious foundry work. Cast a little aluminum with my homemade setup but to actually make something significant would be satisfying.

How large of a pour have you done? What would be a realistic goal for a hobbyist aluminum pour size? Is there any chance of pouring iron on a hobbyist level?


2 quart pot and it's been almost 20 years since I fired up. Yes you can do backyard iron. Two drum Cupala furnace plans sit on a dusty bookshelf. You can melt iron and steel with oil on forced air in a crucible.
